Understanding IP Ratings
IP stands for Ingress Protection and is formed using two numbers: IPXX.
The two numbers refer to two separate levels of protection.

> 50mm |
1 | Water Droplets Protects from vertical water drop when mounted in an upright position |
2 | > 12.5mm Protects from solid objects bigger than 12.5mm in diameter (eg, fingers, similar objects) |
2 | Water Droplets (Angled) Protects from vertical water droplets when at a 15° angle |
3 | > 2.5mm Protects from solid objects bigger than 2.5mm in diameter (eg, small tools, thick wires) |
3 | Spraying Water Protects from water spraying up to an angle of 60° on each side |
4 | > 1mm Protects from solid objects bigger than 1mm in diameter (eg, wires, large insects) |
4 | Water Splashes Protects from water splashes/spray at any angle |
5 | Dust Protected Sufficient protection against dust that could damage equipment. |
5 | Water Jets Protects from water jets with a low/medium pressure from any direction (eg, hose pipes) |
6 | Dust Tight No ingress of dust. Complete protection agains dust. |
6 | Powerful Water Jets Protects from water jets with a high pressure from any direction |
NB: IPX7 and IPX8 are tested under different methods. | 7 | Submerged up to 1m Protects from submersion in water up to 1m deep under defined conditions |
|
Products with IPX7 or IPX8 are not necessarily protected from water jets or splashes. | 8 | Submerged over 1m Protects from submersion in water over 1m deep under defined conditions |
